“Anything can make you feel full, but few things can fill you without regret”
what a wild way to start the year. ive read Gothic Violence before and enjoyed it quite a lot actually but as with that one HA took me a while to really understand the vibes before accepting them. i tried describing this book to my friends but it was nearly impossible. it went something like “imagine American Psycho + Black Mirror + that one guy in school who wore camo pants and hoodies (oh and + a*nd*w ta*e).
i liked Gothic Violence more (its mike’s second book and he admits HA is pretty bad, here i read volume 2 which has some updates). there isn’t really a plot even though some like to say its about overthrowing organizations or whatever. overall super entertaining p*rn-like book. i would give it a 3/5 but its not good enough to really recommend to people unless they are looking for something completely out there. also be careful who you recommend this to if you do, you may lose some friends lol.
the book starts out with the main character driving around and being upset at things and after a while you realize that each “chapter” is an unhinged rant, usually about modern culture. i quite enjoyed "Before the Future Gets Too Low” where i found interesting quotes that I took pictures of and sent to my friends. throughout the book it felt as though i’m being yelled at by my drunk uncle but occasionally he would say something that made sense. its hilarious because you will finish a chapter where he rapid fires the entire list of banned words one could imagine directed towards a group of people, and begin one where he talks sincerely about how alcohol is the devil. its a whirlwind, and definitely not a good book to read before bed. but if you read it when you wake up its free cortisol spike. oh and page 39 is only for the brave.
this week i’m reading Fahrenheit 451
Having read both of Ma's books I think there are select elements that are appealing but (even abstracting out his political views, which I strongly disagree with) but the voice alone doesn't carry the narrative because it's so unstructured.
It's essentially an attempt to ape the Patrick Bateman voice in an alt-right style but without the same level of self awareness.
I think you might enjoy my simulation of Bret Easton Elli's style, but integrated with a more detailed narrative structure (and with a totally different set of political arguments). My novel is about a young protocel in the early aughts, and it's available for free on Amazon until this Friday: https://www.amazon.com/INCEL-Novel-ARX-Han/dp/B0C9SNQK9C/
